Using their FPV goggles and motion controller exclusively, the all-new DJI Avata could be the drone that finally makes first-person view footage look amazing. That is, of course, assuming you can fly through the forest without the assistance of obstacle sensors.
Fortunately, there are a few features that help you get past the learning curve, like a fully enclosed propeller system that allows it to bounce (gently) off a surface while maintaining position and altitude. Plus an “emergency brake” that’ll stop it quickly and over, or “turtle mode” that lets it flip itself over should it tumble and land upside down. Infrared sensors and two downward-facing cameras help ensure you don’t land anywhere you shouldn’t.
Beyond that, though, it’s up to pilot skill to whip it through trees and streets to follow the rider. Should you master that, there are plenty of features to help make your footage look good:
- 1/1.7″ camera sensor
- 155º wide angle
- D-Cinelike color mode
- 12.7mm equivalent focal length
- [email protected]/60fps
- [email protected] slow motion
- RockSteady image stabilization
- HorizonSteady horizon leveling
- 18 minute battery life
- 10km transmission range
Admittedly, the Avata FPV drone is aimed more at recreational users looking to capture the feel of flying than it is adventure sports filmmakers, it could be the consumer-level drone that allows you to nab footage kinda like this:
DJI Avata pricing & availability
The DJI Avata is sold on its own or with a few combos that include the goggles and remote.
- Avata drone without remote or goggles: $629
- Avata drone with Motion Controller & DJI FPV Goggles V2: $1,168
- Avata drone with Motion Controller & new Goggles 2: $1,388
The new DJI Goggles 2 are much smaller (and 170g lighter) than the FPV Goggles V2, yet get individually adjustable diopter focus for each eye, higher resolution, and more brightness. Either way, you’ll need one of the pair of goggles and the motion controller to use the Avata, so choose a bundle if you don’t already own them.
Additional accessories, batteries, and cases all sold separately.
